A new mix design for more sustainable concretes

The provisions of the concrete standard (SN EN 206), e.g. for minimum cement content, k-value and w/c-value, often lead to excessive compressive and tensile strengths. This is not always desirable or necessary, e.g. for walls and parapets and also for piles. With today's knowledge of concrete technology, durable concretes can be designed that are at the same time much more sustainable. A proposal for a new Annex ND to the concrete standard describes the procedure. Two new test methods have been proposed to determine the tendency to segregation and bleeding of fresh concrete. In a pilot application, the method has been proven to be applicable. See publications and downloads (2021-1 to 2023-1).

Optimisation and testing of fresh and hardened concrete properties

Optimisation and testing of fresh concrete properties (consistency, bleeding, sedimentation) and hardened concrete properties (mechanical properties) and durability, especially carbonation and chloride resistance as well as resistance to alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and sulphate attack.

Research projects

In recent years, research projects have been carried out for various clients (e.g. FEDRO (Federal Roads Office), SBB (Swiss Federal Highways), cantons and cemsuisse) on a variety of topic, such as durability of concrete and concrete structures, corrosion of reinforcement in concrete and prestressed concrete structures, freeze-thaw resistance, carbonation resistance, chloride resistance, alkali-silica reaction (ASR). Condition survey and evaluation, repair and monitoring

Conceptual support for the planning and execution of a condition survey and evaluation as well as for the repair of concrete, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Monitoring of the alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and corrosion processes.

Member in national and international committees, e.g.: Swiss Construction Products Commission (until 2017), standard commission SIA 262 "Concrete Construction" (until 2018), Head of WG SIA 262 "Concrete" (until 2018), WG Bridge Research of FEDRO (until 2018), European Committee for Concrete CEN/TC 104 (until 2018). CEN/TC 250/SC 2/WG 1/TG 10 "Durability".

Corrosion, corrosion damage and corrosion protection

Corrosion and corrosion damage e.g. on reinforcing steels, fastening elements, cladding. Protective measures: use of stainless steels and cathodic corrosion protection.

About me

I advise and support public and private building owners, architectural and engineering offices, construction companies and other firms regarding questions concerning concrete technology, condition survey and evaluation as well as repair of concrete, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. In addition, I am active in research and as a speaker at national and international training and further education events and conferences.
